What is the best type of criminal search to do on a
prospective employee? The answer essentially
comes
down to having a thorough understanding of your
company preferences and policies. There are several
types of criminal background searches to choose
from:
- County Criminal
- Address To Criminal
- State Criminal
- National Criminal
County Criminal searches typically have the most up-
to-date information. However, to do a county search
you need to know the counties in which the
candidate has lived. The Address-To-Criminal search
can be especially helpful if you want to make sure
the right counties are searched. This search uses
the address section of a credit header (from a credit
report) to determine what counties to search.
State Criminal searches are very useful if you want to
check out all the counties in a state for possible
criminal records. You can use this search if you know
the candidate has only lived in one specific state.
Statewide records are compiled from information that
each county submits to the repository (each county
may report incidents at different increments of time--
monthly, every 60 or 90 days). The National Criminal
search is a recommended supplemental search to
any
of the above searches because it searches a National
Database that has records from the State
repositories as well as counties. If you have doubts
about the accuracy of address information a
candidate has given you, or if you simply want to
check all the states, use this search.
