What do St. Regis University, James Monroe
University, and Robertstown University all have in
common? They do not exist. Why then, do I mention
them? Because the US Justice Department recently
discovered that at least 135 government employees
bought bogus online college degrees from a diploma
mill (who sold degrees from the above colleges and
many more). Some of those who paid thousands of
dollars for fake diplomas include a senior State
Department employee in Kuwait and a Department of
Justice employee in Spokane, defense lawyer Peter
Schweda said.
Diploma Mills have been starting to spring up all over
the internet and offer anyone with enough money
the ability to claim that they have received academic
degrees that they actually did not. They then use
those fake credentials for seeking other jobs,
promotions or pay raises.
What can an employer do? If education is an
important determining factor in your hiring process,
conduct an education verification. This inexpensive
step will allow you to see if your applicant does
indeed have a degree, the type of degree earned,
the dates of attendance and sometimes even GPA.
