Recently applicants for employment have started to
voice their concern about what is listed on credit
reports many employers obtain during the pre-
employment screening process. It is a common
misunderstanding that credit scores are included in
all credit reports obtained by employers. Most pre-
employment screening credit reports do NOT include
a credit score.
Credit reports that include credit scores can be
obtained but cost more and could be more of a
headache than an aide in the hiring process. Looking
at credit scores may disqualify some good candidates
that fall under the categories of young workers,
students, the elderly, those who have been divorced,
or the poor. These candidates may not have
had the opportunity to build strong credit scores
because of age or economic position. Also, many
candidates feel that having a potential employer
know their credit score infringes on their privacy.
Therefore, if employers do choose to obtain credit
reports with credit scores, caution should be
exercised.
